What is MKV?
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format, a
file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle
tracks inside a single file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for
storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar
in conception to other containers like FLV, MP4 or ASF, but is entirely open in
specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software.
Matroska file types are .MKV for video (with subtitles and audio), .MKA for audio-only
files and .MKS for subtitles only. The most common use of .MKV files is to store
HD video files.
What is FLV?
Flash Video (FLV ) is the name of a file format used to deliver video over the
Internet using Adobe Flash Player (formerly known as Macromedia Flash Player)
versions 6-10. Until version 9 update 2 of the Flash Player, Flash Video referred
to a proprietary file format, having the extension FLV. The most recent public
release of Flash Player supports H.264 video and HE-AAC audio. Flash Video content
may also be embedded within SWF files. Notable users of the Flash Video format
include YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, Reuters.com and many other news providers.
